How should I describe manual labor experience for a business (marketing) job?
trying internship marketing job dg college. pm oy history mover moving company. de job experience resume somewhat fit marketing business job?
I thinking wg groups, communication, love input word this.

I imagine a resume for a marketing company is extremely important because it shows how well you can market yourself!
As a college student, you should probably be alright with no professional work experience. That’s exactly what internships are for.
Just be straightforward about the job. The fact that you worked a tough manual labor job means that a desk job will be a breeze for you. It’s not like they can throw anything at you that’s more rough than hauling a hide-a-bed down a spiral staircase.

I think you are on the right track…
Even though a job as a furniture mover might sound like a blue collar position, there are aspects of the role that require basic marketing skills:
- excellent communication skills. How well can you give and receive both verbal and written communication
- ability to work in small groups. No one wants to move a chest of drawers by themselves. Being able to work as a team is critical in any business environment.
- excellent problem solving skills. How do you get a large item down a flight of stairs. What is your strategy for loading a truck so that it is balanced? These issues require the ability to think things out in advance.
- ability to deal with top decision makers. If you are dealing with a family, it is important that you identify who the chief decision makers is. This will make the move all the more efficient. Plus, if they’re going to be the one paying you, you want to make sure they are kept happy. By the same token, in marketing, you have to be able to identify the key decision makers in a room and quickly connect with them.
- excellent work ethic. It may not hurt to mention that, despite the physical demands of your job, you always maintained a positive work ethic and mental attitude. There will be times in your marketing career when you will be asked to do things you don’t agree with, or to perform menial tasks you believe to be “beneath you.” So it is important that you be able to see the big picture and understand that these issues often simply come with the territory.
- salesmanship. Perhaps there were times during your job when you had to “up-sell” a client on a particular service. This may have been packaging items for moving, renting a dolly, buying moving materials, etc. The ability to recognize a need and sell to that particular need is a valuable job skill.

You are not afraid to get your hands dirty and do what it takes to get the job done. Getting along with others and excellent communication skills are definitely important in any marketing position.
