The biggest mistake is to commission a website from a web designer who knows nothing about how users and search engines actually behave. No web designer will actually admit that they are ignorant of these behaviors but almost all of them are.
Only one in thousand new websites are designed for users and search engines, the vast majority are designed only for the client. They may look nice (sometimes!) but they don’t actually work. They are not search engine friendly and do not stand a chance of appearing high in the listings. If users do find the site and can’t see exactly what they are looking for in the first couple of seconds they will just hit the back button.
To avoid this very common mistake it is essential to find a designer who is up to date on SEO and user behavior studies. There are very few!

They believe they can earn a lot of money in very little time and with very little effort. They do not have a plan and jump from one business opportunity to the next. They believe the hype that fill up their mailbox. They do not focus on something they know about. They do not invest the time and money required to do it right.

The failure to modify, and test.
You MUST, and I do mean MUST… Test your strategies, looking at the results, and then make modifications again and test again.
Also, most people come into the business with the theory, I’m going to start making $10,000 this month. Unless they have a huge budget to start with, it’s not going to happen.
Internet marketing is a game of education, practice, testing, and as my fiancee tells me “Try and Try Until Success”.
I spend a fair amount of money on education every month, simply because I don’t want to learn all of it by trial and error.
But even with everything I’ve learned, I still test, and test, and test.. and try new things, and change that, and keep on keeping on..

They make many of the mistakes mentioned above (and below), namely: they think it’s going to be easy to make money online; they think they don’t need to test what they’re doing; they’re too easily distracted towards the next big thing; they try and run a ‘how to make money online’ website when they have no experience of making money online.
The number #1 mistake is that they don’t build a website that people want to visit – they don’t get traffic – before they start wondering how to make money.

Not knowing their business.
A lot of people are lured into the internet business because of certain ebook that they read that promises millions. So they end up losing time, money, and energy.
Are you doing this web business because it will produce tons of money or are you in this business because you like doing it and eventually helping people with what you can do?
Start a plan. A business plan. You will be held accountable for the plans that you make for your business. This also gives you a metric for which to gauge yourself.
Give yourself mini milestone to accomplish. That will create what I call mini-successes. Which in turn will create momentum for you.
Internet marketing takes some planning and understanding of what you have to offer. Marketing is just one part of the whole equation.
Research. Research. Research.
If you expect to get one million dollars by not working (as most of those internet ads says), think twice. As most of the answers dictate, it will take work. That’s why you need to be in business because you like doing it not because of the money. In the end, if you do it for money, you will not get any satisfaction.

I would say the biggest mistake is not using free PR tools rather than paying for expensive ads. You can’t afford expesive ads at first. Doing free promotion online and taking advantage of PR in the local news and to your friends can help the word of mouth spread without spending all your seed money. The blog below writes about online marketing ideas and resources too.
